A passion for teaching
Teaching is an investment in the future of humanity.

When I was in college, I enthusiastically edited my friends' papers. In my first year of medical school, I relished in helping my sister learn to factor polynomials. It was only natural that I would follow in my mother's footsteps and pursue a career in teaching as a surgeon.
When I landed the opportunity in Salt Lake City to take a faculty position right out of training, I planned to keep that job until retirement. But for the disruptions of the pandemic and my breast cancer diagnosis, perhaps I might have done so.
In my transition to Western Washington, I affiliated with two medical schools before my first day of work. I have engaged with dozens of medical students in the last few years, in clinical rotations, oral examinations, and in delivering Grand Rounds talks regularly. One of my medical students will soon be matching into general surgery. I am so proud!
If you too are passionate about teaching, then we can connect on the meaning and the challenges of this important work.

Sincerely,
Jill
